Classroom Volunteer Expectations

There is plenty to do in our classroom!! When you come into the classroom there are some expectations we would like you to follow.

• Sign in and out upon arrival and departure in the office.
• Wear your nametag for identification.
• Be prompt and dependable If possible; please email at least one day in advance to let us know you will not be there at your scheduled time.
• Please whisper while working with kids in the classroom.
• Please don’t interrupt students while they are working unless it is to help with social frustrations or to remind them to whisper.
• Please help children talk out problems using the (I feel…When you…I need…). We can help you understand this the first few times in the classroom. We have a peace table where they can talk out their frustrations as well. The person holding the flowers is the person speaking. They each take turns.
• Help them when they have a raised hand. This means they need help or would like to have their work checked. Please ask them to read it to you or have them tell you what they have learned. More guidance will be given when you help out in the classroom.
• Specific activity or groups Sometimes there will be specific tasks for which students will be working on things with you (A few at a time). These things may vary by week or day.
• Be patient when working with children. They may be having difficulties of which you are not aware. Your patience will work wonders.
• Be flexible in responding to the needs of children and staff.
• Be confidential A child’s work and behavior in school is to be held in confidence. Discuss problems with the teacher, not with other volunteers, parents, or in the community.
• Be a positive role model for children in attitude, behavior & language. Let your conversations demonstrate respect for others.
• Notify us if a child confides in you about any social/emotional issues that could benefit from a follow-up by a teacher.
